Background
Dominion proposes to construct 500kV/30 kV high-voltage transmission lines, and substations along Route 7 extending from Belmont Ridge Parkway to Loudoun County Parkway and beyond. For perspective, the Brooklyn Bridge is only 127' tall. Along with these transmission lines, Dominion is also proposing to construct several new multi-acre substations long route 7 Dominion calls this proposed power infrastructure “Aspen to Golden.”
Why is this Happening? The Economic Development Office of Loudoun County describes Loudoun as the “Data Center Capital of the World,” and estimates that approximately 70% of the world’s internet traffic transits our County. To service data center's expaning energy requirements, Dominion intends to expand these massive lines through the residential corridors and scenic easements along Route 7. Dominion's plans call for substations and towers that are higher and more expansive done than those along River Creek Parkway and Cross Trail Blvd. Loudoun's central role as an international hub of internet traffic and data managment demands equally sophisticated energy technology -- such as undergrounding-- to provide power to customers in a more community and environmentally responsbile manner. The Lansdowne Task Force is engaged with experts who have developed a viable plan for undergrounding these linesin the energy industry to determine what realistic, alternative methods Dominion can implement so its footprint on Route 7 limited greenspace can be minimized.
Are there Alternatives? Yes! Loudoun County has engaged energy experts who have developed a viable, environmentally sensitive plan for undergrounding these lines so Dominion's footprint on Route 7's limited greenspace can be minimized.
